AVBOB was formed after the 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak.
In 1921 they took over the firm, Jacobs and Opperman.
In 1951 formed a new company Onderlinge Versekerings Genootskap - Mutual Assurance Society AVBOB in Bloemfontein.
In 1956 the Head Office moved to Pretoria.

The main functions of AVBOB are:
- To render affordable life assurance to clients.

AVBOB Group Structure
AVBOB belongs inherently to its policyholders. The activities of the Society are controlled by a
Board of Directors (Min 7; Max15). AVBOB Mutual Assurance Society is the controlling body and the trade name of the 4
divisions.
AVBOB provides cover for the whole family (applicant, spouse, children, parents and
extended) under the Family Assurance.
Cover can also be obtained under an Assistance (Funeral) Policy, but this policy only caters for the applicant, spouse and children.
AVBOB has a long-term license to practise both life and funeral
assurance.
The life assurance and funeral assurance products are marketed through the life office via AVBOB representatives, independent brokers and funeral service representatives.
Policies to encourage one to save for a special need can be obtained.
AVBOB also make provision for Group Scheme policies.
Funeral Service
The nature and scope of the funeral service offices is to collate the necessary funeral arrangement and to render a cost effective funeral service country wide on a 24-hour basis.

- The two manufacturing industries trade under the name of
AVBOB Industries Ltd.
- Larger suppliers of coffins, wreaths and tombstones.
- Rustenberg manufactures only tombstones.
- Also have an engineering division that restores hearses vehicles and equipment.
Investments
The investment division invest funds of insurance (premiums of policyholders) in
property, shares, (purchasing of shares on stock exchange) and
money market (fixed deposits) to ensure maximum returns for policyholders.
AVBOB owns investment properties in Pretoria, Secunda, Cape Town, Eastern Cape and
Witbank.
